The best place to buy party favors, souvenirs, and decorations in Divisoria PDF  | Print |  E-mail

A do-it-yourself party is never complete without a trip to Divisoria. After all, there is no reason for you to buy expensive party favors, souvenirs and decorations since they will only be used once, then given/thrown away or forgotten about. Plus, the loot in loot bags need not be expensive because as long as the toys inside entertain kids (and are safe enough to be played with), they will be much appreciated. So if you're putting together the party by yourself, and you want fancy but affordable "miscellaneous" party stuff, pack your things (and put them in a secure, snatcher-proof place) and head to Divisoria.

If you're going there with only the party goods as your objective, don't waste your time searching and comparison-shopping in the overcrowded mall. You're bound to lose your patience, get lost, or forget the location of the stall where you found a better deal on wholesale items. Instead, go straight to Anding's Toys Int'l Inc., a specialty store for kids toys. It sells loads of toys (big to small ones) plus party favors such as banners, party hats, invitations, and plastic bags for the giveaways. And let's not forget the giveaways themselves - just choose from any of the small toys that fit your theme, buy them at a good wholesale price, and stash them in your goody/prize bag.

I went there recently and got a laugh out of finding the exact toys included in a friend's son's birthday loot bags. I felt pretty bad for my wealthy friend since she must have hired somebody to gather toys for the loot bags and paid an unnecessary price when she could've just bought them by herself (but then again, she really isn't the type to blend in the Divisoria crowd). I also got frustrated with Landmark Department Store, because most of the toys they sell in the Baby Section of the mall you will find in Divisoria Mall/Anding's, at a totally cheaper price.

To reach Anding's, find the Tabora exit in Divisoria Mall. There you'll see a large building in front of you; look for the Anding's store sign hanging on the second level. You won't miss the entrance since it's just a set of escalators leading to the second floor. Don't be fooled by the dull warehouse appearance or even the smells (I'm not sure if recurring or coincidental). Anding's was not meant to be a kid-friendly place (as is anywhere else in Divisoria), but you are surely to find bargains for wholesale items.

Anding's Toys

Ask any of the salespersons about party goods and they will lead you to it. Most of the stalls offer party hats, name tags and banners with character designs, so if your theme involves very popular characters like Hello Kitty, SpongeBob, The Incredibles, etc., then you're good to go. Unfortunately, they don't have the latest cartoon crazes yet like Ben10, Backyardigans, and other newer Nickelodeon cartoons because those characters are new. You can buy a set of decorated/themed invitations, nametags, party hats, party banners, and plastic loot bags for as low as 20-30 pesos. The ones I bought were matching colorful jungle-themed party hats (set of 10 for P24), party banner (P18), and invitations (set of 10 for P18). You will also find pinatas and pabitins; I didn't ask how much though.

For decorations, some stalls sell colorful 3-feet banderita cut-outs ranging from 20-60 pesos, depending on the design. The ones I bought were cut like a snowflake, each with a different color, for just P20. I really wouldn't recommend buying balloons especially if you don't know how to tie them. Balloons is best left to the experts. A friend of mine thought she'd DIY the balloons but once she started the balloons just kept on popping; another had the balloons blown and tied up in Divisoria, but encountered problems shipping them back to Quezon City.

Tabora St. and Divisoria Mall

While you're in the area, you might want to check out Tabora St. and Divisoria Mall as well. Tabora St. is a haven for standard wedding and baptismal souvenirs; glass souvenirs with a small figurine inside, and maybe a ribbon and some glitter/sand/whatever inside as well. I'm not really into these types of souvenirs especially for kiddie parties, but you might find something to suit your liking.

If you want personalized party tarpaulin banners and invitations, there are several print shops inside Divisoria Mall. They really aren't that hard to find because they stand out from the other stalls selling clothes and miscellaneous stuff. The price range for 2x3 tarpaulins go as low as P250-300; it may even go lower if you already have your own design and are just having them printed. I'm not sure what the prices are for the invitations though.

There are also a couple of hidden party shops inside Divisoria Mall. I was able to buy cute decorated pencils for souvenirs for P19 each - imagine that? The pencils I bought were similar to the ones they sell in Beetroot Purple that cost P25-50 each.

Tips and warnings

  • Remember that Divisoria is a place for true bargain-hunters, so if you will not be able to stand the heat and the crowds, then don't attempt to go there and just buy at your local party shops instead.
  • When you find something that seems like a good bargain, don't buy right away because you might find a better deal somewhere else. Just take note of the place where you found this bargain, in case you don't find a similar or better deal.
  • Always bargain or make tawad. Some will say that it's the last price, but you never know and it won't hurt anyway.
  • Don't buy something just because it's cheap. Look at the quality too.
  • Don't wear flashy jewelry; don't carry easy to snatch bags, put your money in your pockets; etc. Security is common sense. Don't be complacent about anything but don't be overparanoid too. Just blend in the crowd.
